This is her story of why you should get involved.
Why you should help
Most of you know I love to travel and I love particpate in mission trips and projects. I met a woman, Sara Brakhane, through my church, The Gathering, and learned she founded and runs a nonprofit that creates libraries in schools in Honduras. Recently, I was part of a group invited to Sara’s house to pack books and school supplies to ship to Honduras. Sara shared about a volunteering trip, and I was intrigued.
My godmother, Phyllis, always was the librarian at UUMC, where I grew up. She was then the librarian at the building where my godparents lived in in their retirement. She always gifted books for birthdays and holidays, and shared her love of reading with my mom and with me. I had a goal of gifting 1,000 books to The Literacy Partnership at The Gathering, in Phyllis’ memory, but fell short of that goal. I think about it and want to complete the goal at some point, maybe including Chispa Project, the Honduran nonprofit, in the gifting.
Sara invited me on a trip from February 16 - 23 and I would love to go. The trip costs $1,100 and I would purchase airfare separately. Any extra donations that come in above the trip costs would help in the cost of the library I’ll be working on.
I would love to invite you to help me find a way to participate in this trip and be able to help create this library at a school in the capital of Honduras.
