What is it?

Teacher workshops are required for all teachers in schools receiving a library. Because teachers generally do not grow up with children’s literature, they often have few ideas for how to incorporate reading in the classroom. In college, university classes also do not focus on children’s literature outside of a textbook because they do not expect teachers to have access to children’s books.

Key components of our workshop include:

  • Reading out loud

  • Open ended questions

  • Reading activities only requiring pencil and paper

  • Classroom management techniques

  • 10 different reading reflection activities

  • Getting kids excited about reading

Framework

1

Universal Design of Learning framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. Teachers participate and practice 10 different reading activities that can be adapted for various grades and different books.

2

The second focus is how to teach multi-grade or multi-level classrooms. The majority of teachers in Honduras teach more more than one grade. Some schools only have one teacher for grade 1 - 9.

3

Classroom management techniques are actively modeled throughout the training to make the student learning environment most effective.
