2025 Library Installation Season
Inauguration day at Manuel Bueso Pineda Elementary School!
The Honduran school year began in February, which kicked off our library installation season! Here’s a sneak peek at what the rest of 2025 has in store:
February: We began our installations in Tegucigalpa at José Angel Ulloa Elementary School. This school, built on an active fault line, had classrooms made of wood due to frequent earthquakes, something you don’t see everyday in Honduras. Our library is in one of the few cement block structures, protecting the books from the elements. The Chispa Library houses the first books this school has ever had—a transformative addition for these children. They were so excited to start reading and sharing their favorite stories with their peers! Check out some of the photos from this trip below.
March: We’re currently in the process of installing two libraries in the Copán area, marking our return to this culturally rich region, known for Mayan heritage and excellent chocolate. One of these schools, Cesar A. Cueva Elementary School, serves populations of Chorti Mayan students, and work diligently to preserve this native language and teach the culture. We’re committed to supporting them in this work! Manuel Bueso Pineda Elementary school also teaches a not-so-traditional curriculum, including classes on coffee roasting and grinding, one of the main industries in the region. Be sure to check in on social media to see the most current updates from these two projects.
April: A library will be installed at Esteban Guardiola Elementary in the Lago Yojoa area. This school stands out for the strong support from passionate parents who are deeply involved in the educational community. We’re excited for the cultural exchange and adventure awaiting the volunteers who will support this project!
May: Two more library installations will take place, one in Copán and another in Comayagua. In Comayagua, the library we will install in Imaculada Concepcion Elementary School will serve 997 students, making it one of the most high-impact libraries of this year. In Copan, we’re inviting families for our first-ever family-oriented volunteer trip!
June - August: We’ll focus on three schools in and around Comayagua and Tegucigalpa, targeting under-resourced communities with the goal of sparking brighter futures for their students. When Ivan Betancourt Elementary School in Comayagua was founded, classes were taught in houses due to a lack of space and funding. Now, they’ve developed their own space and expanded, and they’re ready for the next project - their library! The selection of schools in Tegucigalpa is still pending, but you’ll be the first to know when we confirm the two schools.
September: We’ll conclude the season in collaboration with Summit Honduras in La Entrada, where we’ll create library corners in a network of smaller schools for the second year in a row. This setup helps teachers better differentiate instruction by offering engaging literacy activities for mixed-grade classrooms, improving the learning experience for all. The exact schools are still being decided, but we expect a small network of 3-7 library corners!
